and it's early but I'll try to articulate how it all makes me feel. When one race/ culture/ gender of students performs poorly in school for an extended period of time there are fundamental problems. A history of black students failing is known to happen frequently in the US. It has been proven that teachers treat black students differently in the classroom. That be because for so they have failed at higher rates than white students and teachers have given up. It could be because of less support at home and in the community. The curriculum being taught could be biased. We didn't teach accurate black history and black cultural issues until 20 years ago in the US. The fact that the black community in Toronto has to go to the school board and propose such an extreme option makes it apparent to me that they KNOW that the education system is fundamentally flawed. I think (as an educator) that the Toronto School Board needs to make drastic changes in how their teachers teach, their curriculum and increase positive relations with ALL minorities. It take years. An extreme reaction like one school for only black students and black teachers is going to put them back farther. I understand why the black community has proposed and I think that it is very unfortunate that it has gotten to that point. I I make sense. Thanks for waking up my.
